RALEIGH, N. Benjamin Watson Jersey .C. -- It looks as if Alexander Semin got the message. Semin scored two goals in the third period to lift the Carolina Hurricanes to a 3-2 victory over the Florida Panthers on Saturday night. It was Semins first two-goal game with Carolina, which signed the Russian forward in July 2012, and then gave him a $35 million, five-year extension last March. His seventh and eighth goals of the season came a day after general manager Jim Rutherford told a local TV station that he was disappointed in Semins production. "Hes one of the best talents in the world, and when he plays hard, hes one of my favourite players to watch," teammate Riley Nash said. "Its a real treat to watch him, especially the way he played tonight." Semin has been criticized for not playing hard at times, but he had eight shots against Florida and finished with a plus-two rating. Semin rarely speaks with the media and declined to talk once again after the victory over the Panthers. The teams were tied at one until Semin took control of a faceoff win by Eric Staal and shot past Tim Thomas at 2:31 of the third. He then scored Carolinas league-leading ninth short-handed goal on a breakaway at 8:57, also on an assist from Staal. The Hurricanes ended a two-game skid and improved to 6-2 in their last eight. The Panthers got a goal from Dmitry Kulikov with 5:39 remaining but Anton Khudobin held on from there, finishing with 37 saves in the win. Florida went 0 for 5 on the power play while falling to 7-29-4 at Carolinas arena. Nash broke a seven-period scoring drought for the Hurricanes at 3:37 of the second. Radek Dvorak speared the puck when it appeared headed out of the offensive zone and fired toward the net. Nash kicked it to his stick and scored past Thomas. Marcel Goc scored his ninth of the season for Florida at 15:05 of the second, tying it at 1. Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas Kopecky assisted. "Its 1-1 in the third, and we have to get points in those games," Florida coach Peter Horachek said. "We created chances to score that weve got to bear down on." Khudobin improved to 7-2 this season. Thomas had 36 saves for Florida. The Hurricanes put pressure on Thomas midway through the first period, but the veteran turned away eight shots in four minutes after penalties to Huberdeau at 6:22 and Ed Jovanovski at 8:27. Florida continued to be hindered by its punchless power play. The Panthers failed to convert on 10 power-play minutes Saturday and are 0 for 32 on the man advantage since Dec. 28. The Panthers failed to score in the second after Kopecky drew a double-minor on Dvorak. During the man advantage, Tomas Fleischmann fanned on one solid scoring chance and Kulikov hit the left post. NOTES: Carolina was shut out by Columbus and Calgary in its previous two games. The Hurricanes last suffered consecutive shutouts in November 2011, losing 4-0 at Montreal and 1-0 at home against Buffalo. ... The Panthers fell to 8-13-3 on the road. ... This weeks sixth seed blew past eighth-seeded U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1 in 75 minutes at The O2. The Czech Berdych tallied four service breaks, compared to zero for the Croatian star Cilic. Berdych is now 6-4 lifetime against Cilic, including 2-2 this season. Day 4s Group A night session match will pit world No. 1 Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic against third-seeded Australian Open titlist Stan Wawrinka. Surprisingly, all seven matches so far this week have ended in straight sets. Group A features the two-time reigning and three-time overall Tour Finals champion Djokovic (1-0), Wawrinka (1-0), Berdych (1-1) and Cilic (0-2). Djokovic topped Rafael Nadal in last years finale in London. The 27-year- old Serbian star is two wins away from clinching the year-end No. 1 ranking for the third time in four years. This weeks four-player Group B boasts second-seeded Wimbledon champion Roger Federer (2-0), fourth-seeded UU. Jeremy Maclin Jersey. S. Open runner-up Kei Nishikori (1-1), fifth- seeded British favorite Andy Murray (1-1) and seventh-seeded Canadian slugger Milos Raonic (0-2). On Thursday, the 17-time Grand Slam king Federer will battle Murray and Nishikori will take on Raonic in some more round-robin play. Federer and Murray have split 22 career matchups, but Federer is 2-0 this year and 3-0 versus Murray all-time at the Tour Finals. Federer, who is making a record 13th consecutive appearance at the Tour Finals and still has an outside chance of capturing the year-end top ranking, holds the record for the most titles at this exclusive event with six. If Federer were to qualify for his 12th career Tour Finals semifinal, it would tie the record set by Ivan Lendl. The 33-year-old Swiss icon would also be the oldest player to advance to the last four since 2003 runner-up Andre Agassi. Nishikori, Raonic and Cilic are making their Tour Finals debuts this week. Round-robin action will be staged here through Friday, followed by the semifinals on Saturday and lucrative final on Sunday.
